Sea-to-Sky Gondola Private Tour | 6 Hours from Vancouver
Highway 99 north of Vancouver runs between a fjord and a mountain range for an hour straight. The Sea-to-Sky Gondola Private Tour drives it properly, stopping at the viewpoints most people pass at 80 kilometres an hour.
You finish 885 metres above Howe Sound, on a suspension bridge with the Stawamus Chief on one side and the ocean on the other.
A private six-hour chauffeur-driven tour from Vancouver up the Sea to Sky Highway to Squamish. It covers Porteau Cove, Shannon Falls, the Stawamus Chief viewpoint and the Sea to Sky Gondola with its Summit Lodge, Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge and viewing platforms. Gondola tickets are paid separately.
Squamish sits 60 to 75 minutes from downtown Vancouver, not 45. Add the return leg and roughly two and a half hours of your six are spent in the vehicle.
That leaves around three and a half hours for stops, which covers the gondola properly plus two or three roadside viewpoints. It is a comfortable half day, not a rushed one.
Anyone quoting 45 minutes each way is measuring from the north end of the city on an empty Tuesday. Weekend traffic through Horseshoe Bay is real.

Where You Go
- Stop 01
The Sea to Sky Highway
The drive is a stop in its own right. Highway 99 runs between Howe Sound and the Coast Mountains for roughly 60 kilometres, with the water on your left and granite walls on your right.
The route was rebuilt ahead of the 2010 Winter Games, which widened the lanes, added barriers and made the pullouts usable. It is regularly listed among the most scenic drives in Canada.
Your chauffeur stops where it is worth stopping. Doing this in a rental means either watching the road or missing the view.
- Stop 02
Porteau Cove Provincial Park
Porteau Cove sits on the shore of Howe Sound about forty minutes north of the bridge. The old ferry terminal pier runs out over the water, and you can walk to the end of it.
The site is a working dive spot, with sunken vessels placed offshore as artificial reefs. Divers, kayakers and paddleboarders share the beach in summer.
From the pier you see the fjord in both directions and the peaks of Anvil Island and the Tantalus Range across the water. It is the best first stop on the route and costs nothing.
- Stop 03
Shannon Falls Provincial Park
Shannon Falls drops 335 metres in three tiers, making it the third highest waterfall in British Columbia. It sits directly off the highway just south of Squamish.
A boardwalk and short trail run from the car park to two viewing platforms, taking about ten minutes on foot. The trail is flat and suitable for most guests.
Volume changes dramatically with the season. Spring snowmelt from May to June is the loudest and most impressive. Late summer runs thinner but the light is better.
- Stop 04
The Stawamus Chief
Next door to Shannon Falls stands the Stawamus Chief, a granite dome rising 700 metres straight out of the valley floor. It is one of the largest granite monoliths in North America and draws climbers from around the world.
You will see climbers on the walls from the base if you look carefully. The hiking trails to the three summits start here, though they are steep and not part of this tour.
Squamish is Squamish Nation territory, and the Chief carries deep cultural significance to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people. Your chauffeur will give you the context.
- Stop 05
Sea to Sky Gondola
The main event. The gondola opened in 2014 and carries eight-person cabins from the base station up to Summit Lodge at 885 metres, a ride of about ten minutes.
At the top you get the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, a 100-metre span crossing the gap behind the lodge, and the Spirit Viewing Platform looking straight down Howe Sound. On a clear day the view runs south past Anvil Island toward Vancouver Island.
Walking trails at the summit include the Panorama Trail, the Wood Nymph Loop and the Chief Overlook, which faces back at the monolith you just stood beneath. The easy interpretive trails are stroller and wheelchair friendly, which is unusual for an alpine site.
- Stop 06
Squamish, or an Extra Stop
Time permitting, two additions worth knowing about.
Britannia Mine Museum. A former copper mine on the highway south of Squamish, now a National Historic Site with an underground train ride and a mill building show. It needs about ninety minutes, so it works best if you skip a viewpoint or upgrade to eight hours.
Brackendale. From November to February, thousands of bald eagles gather along the Squamish River to feed on spawning salmon. The eagle count here has been among the highest recorded anywhere. Purely seasonal, and worth timing a winter tour around.
Tell us at booking and we will build the day around whichever appeals.
Tickets and Meals
The gondola ticket is not included in the tour rate. We can pre-purchase on your behalf so you skip the queue at the base station. Confirm current pricing on the Sea to Sky Gondola website before you travel, as rates change by season and there are child, youth, senior and family tiers. Porteau Cove, Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief viewpoint are all free provincial parks. No tickets, no fees.
There is no booked restaurant meal in the six-hour rate. The Summit Restaurant at the top of the gondola is the natural lunch stop, and Squamish town has good options if you prefer to eat at sea level. Tell us in advance and we will reserve a table.
Pickup and Drop-Off
| Location | What to expect |
| Downtown Vancouver hotels | Chauffeur meets you in the lobby |
| Vancouver International Airport (YVR) | Meet-and-greet in the terminal, luggage carried through |
| Canada Place cruise terminal | Timed around your ship’s clearance |
| North Vancouver and West Vancouver | Ideal starting point, closer to the highway |
| Richmond and Burnaby | Short transfer time applies |
Staying on the North Shore? Starting from Lonsdale or Ambleside removes the bridge crossing from both ends and buys you extra time at the summit.
Cruise passengers need a port call of at least eight hours for this package. Highway 99 has limited alternative routes, so we build in a buffer.

Best Times to Book
May and June
Shannon Falls runs at full snowmelt volume, which is when it is genuinely loud. Summit trails are open and daylight is long.
July to September
The clearest views down Howe Sound and the warmest summit weather. Also the busiest, so an early start matters.
November to February
Snowshoe season at the summit, thinner crowds, and the Brackendale eagles gathering on the Squamish River.
Morning starts
Gondola queues build through the day, and Highway 99 traffic thickens northbound on summer weekends.
Who This Tour Suits
- Visitors who want mountains without committing to a full Whistler day
- Photographers working ocean, waterfall and alpine in one half day
- Families, since the gondola does the climbing and the trails are easy
- Cruise passengers with a port call of eight hours or more
- Repeat visitors who have already done Grouse and Capilano
- Guests with limited mobility, since the summit trails are unusually accessible
A note on accessibility. The gondola cabins, Summit Lodge and the easy interpretive trails are wheelchair and stroller friendly. Shannon Falls has a short flat boardwalk. Porteau Cove’s pier is level. This is one of the more accessible mountain tours available from Vancouver.
